Nikoi Island review – A luxury private island resort

“We didn’t want to offer guests what they have come to expect from luxury resorts”

Andrew, one of the co-owners of Nikoi Island, confesses on our 1h journey from the ferry terminal to the small private pier on the East Coast of Bintan, which like its neighbor Batam is a quick ferry ride away from Singapore.

About Nikoi Island

Contrary to what most couple friends of ours and us thought, Nikoi Island was opened in 2007 as a family friendly private resort and not as a romantic getaway.

Nikoi’s villa balcony

Owned by 4 expats looking for a paradise retreat not too far from Singapore, the resort is booked solid 6 months in advance and enjoys a 90% average occupancy, even during the week. All this, selling exclusively directly through their website.

The 20 beach houses are spread apart from each other for privacy and a few feet from the sand.

After we got to our room Andrew’s words resonated.

The rooms at Nikoi Island

Upwards of S$400 per night the rooms have no AC despite the very high 30 degree and above temperatures, no bathroom amenities except for the shower ones, no bath tubs to indulge on at the end of a chilled day, no blinds to protect you from the 6am sunrise (or from the passing guests) and no room service.

If you need anything you will have to walk back to the main area. There is also an ipod dock to play music and three showers in each beach house.

Food and drinks at Nikoi Island

There is no food on offer unless at the pre-established meal times which consist of set menus with no choice. Of course, should you not like what is on offer on the adult menu you can always opt for the kids one. And probably, if you didn’t like either or have a food allergy the chef would oblige.

However, the lack of options not only surprised but also disappointed us slightly – for such an exclusive location and accommodation we had indeed come to expect at least choice and less of a feeling of being at an all-inclusive resort in Cancun. The food was mostly Indonesian, tasty and unsophisticated with a strong home-cooked meal feel to it but it always included a degree of spiciness which might be hard to stomach after a day in the hot sun.

There were also unexpected elements at the other end of the spectrum. Courtesy of one of the owners’ exquisite wine and liquor passion, the resort boasts one of the largest selections of rums in Asia and a great array of cocktails made with fresh fruits.

Amenities at Nikoi Island

If you want a massage it will be delivered right to your room on your very own massage hut on the ground floor of your beach house. And, despite being in a remote tiny island, there is a tennis court to play and a movie room for families. Swinging ropes and swings are scattered throughout the island so you can feel like a true Tarzan.

Arrival at Nikoi Island

Arrival at Nikoi

Despite lacking in expected amenities, Nikoi is no doubt, paradise, particularly if your expectations are aligned or if you bring the kids along. There are treasure hunts organized by the staff and plenty of activities to keep them entertained while you can enjoy some “me” or “us” time and a delicious sunset cocktail.

Verdict of Nikoi Island

As a couple looking for a romantic retreat we were slightly let down. The rooms were fabulous 2 storey wooden huts with plush four-poster beds which we would have happily stayed in for most of our stay but every time we needed anything we had to get it ourselves.

We would have liked to enjoy snacks mid-afternoon, room service or a drink on our veranda while relaxing yet all this was not possible unless at the main bar or unless you order it and take it back to your room.

Nikoi’s Pina colada

Although the Indonesian beach is a beautiful white powder sand crescent and the water of a crystalline blue teeming with corals, to get away from the running around and jumping of the kids we had to strategically organise our schedule and move away when we could hear their voices approaching the pool.

The resort has at least addressed this issue at meal times when they have two dining areas one for families and the other for singles. However, during our stay when the resort was full there was only one other couple, confirming Andrew’s warning: Nikoi was designed with families in mind.

If you are looking for a private romantic getaway, Nikoi requires some work and advance planning. When booked in advance, they can organise beach or private room dinners and if you care to insist, the chef might cook you more beach-friendly food.

Dinner at Nikoi Island

Nikoi’s dinner

I can’t help but ask myself: would I pay so much to visit a friend’s island where, unavoidably, you compromise on some freedom and comfort for friendly hospitality and the ultimate island experience?

And on the other hand, as Andrew put it, are all the shortcomings something I genuinely need or something I have come to expect?

Nikoi Island: The devil is in the details

View from the Nikoi Island villa

Nikoi Island villa

The bill from Friday to Sunday reached almost S$2,000 including (rounded numbers):
– Room: S$480 x 2 = S$960- Full board: S$210 x 2 = S$420- Transport: S$160 x 2 = S$320 (ferry, car, boat)

Unfortunately these are all mandatory costs so there is not much you can do. If you plan to visit Nikoi you should expect at least S$1,700 for two.

Budget for sunset cocktails, they are both reasons enough to go!

This is Cosmonauts metro station in the capital of Uzbekistan. The oldest surviving metro system in central asia.
.
Since 2018 you are allowed to photograph the many ornate and themed stations and platforms in the metro including this one devoted to Soviet astronauts like Yuri Gagarin the first person to travel to space. .
Tue colours of the tiles change from blue to black and white like the Earth's atmosphere.
.
The metro could not be photographed until 2018 because it was set aside as an air shelter in case of nuclear attacks this being a sensitive military target heavily guarded.

.
The Blue City of Jodhpur in Rajasthan has a city core with most houses painted in blue, inside and out. This has given the city its nickname .
The colour is associated with the Brahmin, an Indian caste of teachers and priests that follow Shiva and like to paint their houses blue, the colour of this Hindu God.
.
The colour is also believed to keep mosquitoes away and, let's admit it, makes for amazing photography.

Instagram post 2183117215862352122_945610586 SINGAPORE - I love Singapore's colonial shop house architecture but did you know there are 4 marked style periods?
.
The most typical and recognisable style is this one, with the ornate facade and the top windows that were typical of the 2nd half of the 19th century, but there are 3 other from later periods the last one of which evolved into Art Deco architecture (with the square facades straight lines and high spyres).
.
These houses on the picture are in Emerald Hill, a very high end area off Orchard Road that is quiet and lined with very expensive and pretty homes.
.
Shophouse architecture can also be found in Malacca and Penang, in Malaysia.

Instagram post 2180684707539431680_945610586 MERV, TURKMENISTAN - a UNESCO site in the middle of the desert that was inhabited by several civilisations from the Bronze Age till the Middle Ages.
.
Although not much of Merv has been preserved and a lot still needs to be excavated, this Mausoleum to Sultan Ahmed Sanjar is the only full structure standing. .
It is said that when the Moguls ransacked the area they spared ig for fear. .
The mausoleum dates to the 12th century and it had a dome decorated with lie glazed tiles as was typical in the area.
.
The mausoleum does not hold his tomb because they were worried about tomb robbers so it ended in another unknown location. .
This structure and Sultan Sanjat are found on Turkmenistan notes.

Instagram post 2179257215733694078_945610586 BUKHARA - I have never been so happy to wake up at 5am than to explore the empty streets of Bukhara as the sun was rising.
.
This ancient city along the Silk Road still has many well preserved mosques, markets, caravanserai and madrasas most of which have these truly stunning domed gates. I could stare at them for hours, each unique, each the result of so much intricate work.
.
Alone with just our cameras, tripod and a thick sweater (it was really cold!) @edwin.grummitt and I wandered the streets waiting for the sunlight to hit the blue tiles, it was magical. I have him to thank for this great shot.

.
Samarkand was one of the most famous stops along the Silk Road and it's filled with incredible sights.

I have to say I could have spent a whole day just in this square looking at the details of all the buildings. .

Instagram post 2176401653081626703_945610586 KHIVA - Khiva used to be a major stop along the Silk Road and is famous for this large blue minaret that you see in the background and which is in fact unfinished.
.
As a stop in the Silk Road, it gathered importance centuries ago, but for sobering and dark reasons as it was home to one of the most important slave markets in the region and to a large prison.
.
Today, Khiva receives some tourism although it is less famous than Samarkand or Bukhara. It is often referred to as a living museum because most of the old buildings are now used for tourism infrastructure and shops but are not inhabited.
.
I'm standing atop the former wall of the citadel some parts of which have been preserved.

Instagram post 2173462647486320005_945610586 STEPPE - I love train travel, I always have, and if its onboard a luxury train even better. Fine China, silverware, crystal glasses and a cooked to order breakfast the train makes its way across the Uzbek steppe. .
I never knew how much of central asia is vast emptiness, pure dusty desert with little life, kilometer upon kilometer of nothingness to the naked eye. But there is life, just hidden and adapted to the extreme heat and cold, to the lack of water.
.
This is why the cities along the Silk Route were so important to traders and caravans, among so much hardship, they were real oasis.
.
I couldn't peel myself away from the window trying to imagine what it must have been like. .
